Using the profits from his first successful brand, La Escepcion, he acquired a farm in the Vuelta Abajo, a region renowned for its exceptional tobacco.
In 1865, the Hoyo de Monterrey brand was born in Havana and quickly gained notoriety for its sweet, aromatic blend of cigars. Even after Don José's return to Spain and death, the company flourished under the management of his daughter, consolidating its reputation as Cuba's largest factory at the time.

After a period of concentration on sugarcane production following the death of Don José, the brand and its plantations were sold to the Fernandez Palicio y Ca company.
