Meerapfel, Cameroon's venerable tobacco grower, is returning to an old business by creating a brand of cigars bearing the family name.
The Meerapfels are tobacco growers who have long specialized in leaves from the West African nation of Cameroon, a wrapper prized for its rarity, flavor and distinctly rough exterior. Richard Meerapfel, who died in 2003, is widely credited with saving Cameroon tobacco from the brink of extinction.
The world of cigars is rich in tradition, know-how and innovation. At InterTabac 2022, Meerapfel unveiled its second line, "Meerapfel Meir", a name that pays tribute to the man who founded the Meerapfel cigar factory in 1876 in the village of Untergrombach, Germany.
The line offers four different types of glazing: Double Robusto (52 x 146 mm), Piramide (52 x 156 mm), Robusto (50 x 124 mm) and Churchill (47 x 178 mm)and joins the Master Blends series, inspired by the emblematic figures of the Meerapfel family.
The Meerapfels have been working with tobacco for hundreds of years, dating back to the 1600s. They were tobacco farmers in Germany, and in 1876 began making cigars in a town called Untergrombac, northeast of Stuttgart and not far from the French border. The family rolled cigars there by hand for around 150 years, a story that came to an abrupt end during the Second World War.
"During the war, the factory was destroyed, and the Meerapfel cigar disappeared," says Jérémie Meerapfel. The cigars launched today mark a return to Meerapfel's bygone days. "This is the moment when we can dive into our past," says Meerapfel, "and resurrect a tradition that is very, very important to us."
This is the fourth time the Meerapfel family has dedicated an exclusive series to one of its members, and "Meir" is described as the "Genesis of Uberluxury".
